White Tower of Thessaloniki (Greece)

Weather…

The White Tower of Thessaloniki is the most iconic landmark of Greece's second-largest city, standing prominently on the waterfront promenade. Built around 1535 during the reign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, it was constructed on the foundations of an older Byzantine fortification. Originally part of the city's defensive sea walls, the tower served as a fortress, a garrison, and a notorious prison under Ottoman rule. Due to the brutal executions carried out there in the 19th century, it was famously known as the Tower of Blood. After the city was liberated in 1912, the structure was symbolically whitewashed to cleanse its dark past, giving it its current name. Today, the 34-meter-high circular tower houses a museum documenting the rich history of Thessaloniki and features visitors a spectacular panoramic view of the Thermaic Gulf.
