Saint Demetrius Church
The Church of Saint Demetrius is the primary sanctuary dedicated to the patron saint of Thessaloniki and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1988. The current five-aisled basilica stands atop the ruins of a Roman bath complex where Saint Demetrius was imprisoned and martyred in 303 AD during the persecutions of Emperor Galerius. Throughout history, the structure underwent significant transformations, functioning as a Christian temple before being converted into a mosque during the Ottoman era from 1493 to 1912. A devastating fire in 1917 destroyed much of the building, necessitating an extensive restoration project that integrated original fragments and concluded in 1949. The interior is celebrated for its surviving 7th-century mosaics, which provide rare and precious examples of early Byzantine art depicting the saint with children and donors. The crypt located beneath the altar marks the traditional site of the martyrdom and serves as an evocative museum showcasing the church's complex archaeological layers.
