Palace of St. Michael and St. George (Greece)

Weather…

The Palace of St. Michael and St. George in Corfu Town is a preeminent example of Regency-style neoclassical architecture, built during the British protectorate of the Ionian Islands. Constructed between 1819 and 1824, the edifice was crafted using limestone imported from Malta and served as the official residence of the British High Commissioner. It was also the headquarters for the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, from which it derives its name. Designed by Sir George Whitmore, the palace features a grand Doric colonnade and opulent state rooms decorated with intricate frescoes and carvings. Following the unification of the Ionian Islands with Greece in 1864, the palace was utilized by the Greek royal family as a summer retreat. Today, it houses the Museum of Asian Art, one of the most important of its kind in Europe, featuring over 15,000 artifacts from China, Japan, and Southeast Asia. Its location at the northern end of the Spianada square makes it a focal point of Corfu’s UNESCO-listed historic center.
