Achilleion Palace (Greece)

Weather…

The Achilleion is a magnificent palace on the island of Corfu, built in 1890 by Empress Elisabeth of Austria, also known as Sisi. She dedicated the estate to her favorite hero from Greek mythology, Achilles, which is reflected in the name and artistic design. The architecture is in the neoclassical style and is surrounded by lush gardens that house numerous statues, including the famous 'Dying Achilles' sculpture. Following Sisi's death in 1898, the palace was purchased in 1907 by German Kaiser Wilhelm II, who used it as a summer residence and redesigned the garden. During the world wars, the building served as a military hospital and later as a venue for diplomatic meetings. Today, it is a museum offering insights into the lives of European aristocracy and showcases an impressive collection of original furniture and artworks. The location provides a panoramic view of Corfu town and the Ionian Sea.
