💡 Tips

  • Arriving by ferry into Gialos harbor has one of the most remarkable views in Greece, so make sure to be on deck early.
  • Be prepared for hundreds of steps if you walk up the Kali Strata from the harbor to the upper village (Chorio).
  • Tap water is scarce and mostly imported; rely on bottled water for drinking and be mindful of your usage.
  • Day trippers usually leave around 4 PM; stay overnight to experience the harbor's magical, quiet evening atmosphere.

Look for small bakeries in Chorio or Gialos selling these sweet local donuts made with rice, cinnamon, and ouzo.

🍽
Fresh Octopus

Try grilled or sun-dried octopus hanging outside traditional seafood restaurants along the promenade.

🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots

🛍
Natural Sea Sponges

The island's rich diving heritage makes it the best place to buy genuine sponges from small harbor kiosks.

🛍
Local Herbs and Spices

Buy locally gathered oregano, thyme, and mountain tea from specialty stalls near the port.

🧘
Pedi Bay

Take a short bus ride or walk to this tranquil fishing village just past Chorio for quiet swims and relaxed waterfront dining.

🧘
Monastery of Panormitis

A serene pilgrimage site on the island's south side, easily reachable by local bus or boat.

Symi is one of Greece's most scenic islands, captivating visitors with its colorful, neoclassical houses arranged like an amphitheater around Gialos harbor. This architecture is a testament to the wealth once gained from the sponge trade and shipbuilding in the 19th century. A walk up the Kali Strata, a wide staircase with 500 steps, connects the harbor with the upper town of Chorio and has spectacular views of the sea. A major attraction in the south of the island is the Panormitis Monastery, dedicated to the Archangel Michael. It is an important pilgrimage site for sailors and houses two museums and impressive Byzantine frescoes. The island has no natural water sources and is supplied by ship, leading residents to be very conscious of resources. Symi's beaches, such as Nanou or Marathounda, are often pebbly and best reached by water taxi. Culinary-wise, Symi is famous for the tiny 'Symi shrimp', which are fried and eaten whole with their shells. The island is a popular destination for day trips from Rhodes (about 1 hour by fast ferry), but a longer stay is worthwhile to enjoy the evening peace after the excursion boats depart. The best time to visit is May to June and September to October, as temperatures in midsummer can become very high due to the surrounding rock faces.
