💡 Tips
- Prepare for driving on winding, steep mountain roads if arriving from the north; take it slow.
- The local ferry is the best (and sometimes only) way to reach coastal villages like Loutro or Agia Roumeli.
- Cash is king here; ensure you have enough euros, as smaller tavernas or boat operators might not accept cards.
- Respect the local culture; Sfakians are known for their strong traditions and pride.
- Hiking the Imbros Gorge is a great, less crowded alternative to the famous Samaria Gorge.
🍽 Food
A thin pancake-like pie filled with soft cheese and topped with local thyme honey. Find it in any local taverna.
Slow-cooked local lamb or goat. Best enjoyed in traditional mountain village tavernas.
Try the catch of the day at the seaside tavernas right on the waterfront of Chora Sfakion or Loutro.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
The arid, rugged landscape produces exceptionally aromatic honey. Buy directly from local producers.
Look for dried oregano, dictamnus, and mountain tea (malotira) sold in small village shops.
Accessible only by foot or boat, this impressive beach with fresh water springs is incredibly tranquil.
While the gorge below is wild, standing on or near the bridge has a serene and awe-inspiring view of the mountains.

The southern region of Sfakia in Crete gives one of the wildest and most unspoiled coastlines on the island. Far from mass tourism, visitors can experience a dramatic landscape where steep mountains plunge directly into the Libyan Sea. The center of the region, Chora Sfakion, is an easy on the eye fishing village and an excellent starting point for boat trips, as many places here cannot be reached by car. The beaches in the region are diverse and often spectacular. Among the most famous is Paralia Fragkokastellou, a long sandy beach situated right below a Venetian fortress, which is convenient for families due to its shallow waters. To the east of it lies Orthi Ammos with its striking sand dunes. Those who prefer more hidden coves will find quiet retreats with crystal-clear waters at Lakki Beach or Vatalos Beach. For naturists, Filaki Beach is a well-known spot, while Vrisi Beach is conveniently located right next to the port village. The combination of traditional Cretan gastronomy, where local cheeses and lamb dishes dominate, and the countless swimming opportunities such as Agia Marina Beach makes Sfakia a well-suited destination for independent travelers.
