Butterfly Valley of Rhodes (Greece)

Weather…

The Valley of the Butterflies (Petaloudes) on the island of Rhodes is a world-renowned natural phenomenon and an ecological reserve. It is a narrow, wooded valley that becomes home to thousands of Jersey tiger moths (Panaxia quadripunctaria) between June and August. The moths are drawn to the valley by the intense scent of the Oriental Sweetgum trees (Liquidambar orientalis), which thrive in the humid microclimate. The area is nourished by the Pelekanos River, creating small waterfalls and ponds that provide the necessary cooling during the hot summer months. Wooden bridges and stone paths allow visitors to explore the site, though strict rules are enforced to protect the resting insects from disturbance. Geographically, the reserve is located in the northwest of the island, near the village of Theologos. Besides the moths, the valley hosts rich flora and the endemic Rhodes freshwater crab. It is a highly sensitive ecosystem where human activity is managed to ensure the continued survival of the moths' reproductive cycle.
