Lefki occupies the extreme southeastern corner of Crete, offering a landscape that feels completely removed from the island's bustling northern resorts. This area is characterized by arid plateaus, deep gorges, and a sparsely populated coastline that faces the Libyan Sea. The main inland village is Ziros, while the coastal settlements remain small and focused heavily on agriculture and local fishing. The beaches of Lefki are wild, beautiful, and largely undeveloped. Visitors seeking solitude can find it at places like Mazida Ammos beach, Vourlia beach, and the sprawling Chiona beach. The coastline also features striking geological formations and secluded spots such as Argilos, Krinakia, and Alatsolimni. Beaches like Gerondolakkos and Amatos offer crystal-clear waters great for snorkeling, often with very few other people around. The coastal area of Lefki is also the jumping-off point for boat trips to the uninhabited Koufonisi island, famous for its Roman ruins and white-sand coves. Local tavernas in the small coastal hamlets serve excellent, simple Cretan food, emphasizing locally sourced olive oil, mountain herbs, and fresh catches from the deep southern waters.
