💡 Tips
- Visit the Stefanos volcanic crater early in the morning before the day-trip buses arrive from Kos and the sulfur fumes get too hot.
- Wear closed, thick-soled shoes to walk in the crater, as the ground can be extremely hot and rocky.
- Don't be surprised by the strong sulfur smell ('rotten egg' scent) when nearing the volcano area.
- Renting a scooter is the best way to explore the winding roads between Mandraki, the mountain villages, and the crater.

Nisyros is one of the most geologically fascinating islands in the Aegean, as it consists almost entirely of an active volcano. The main town, Mandraki, is set on the north coast and is characterized by narrow alleys, whitewashed houses, and squares decorated with mosaics of black volcanic stones. Perched above the town is the Panagia Spiliani Monastery, built partly inside a cave, which is one of the island's most important religious sites. The absolute highlight is the journey into the island's interior to the caldera. There are ten craters here, of which 'Stefanos' is the largest and most accessible. Visitors can descend directly into the crater, where yellow sulfur crystals steam from fumaroles and the ground is noticeably warm. This surreal place resembles a moonscape. Also worth seeing are the villages of Nikia and Emporios on the crater rim, offering fantastic views over the caldera. Culinary offerings in Nisyros include 'Soumada', a traditional almond syrup, and local cheese aged in red wine. The island is less touristy than its neighbors Kos or Rhodes, making it a convenient destination for nature and hiking enthusiasts. Access is usually by boat from Kardamena (Kos). The best time to visit is spring, when the caldera is lush and green, or early autumn. Sturdy footwear is absolutely necessary for visiting the crater.
