Ha Gorge (Greece)

Weather…

Ha Gorge, located on the eastern part of Crete near the town of Ierapetra, is recognized as one of the wildest and most inaccessible gorges in Europe. Situated on the western slopes of the Thripti mountain range, it is famous for its extreme narrowness, with walls being only a few meters apart in several sections. The vertical limestone cliffs rise nearly 300 meters high, displaying unique geological folding and coloration. Although the gorge is only about 1.6 kilometers long, traversing it requires advanced canyoning skills and professional equipment due to the presence of 27 waterfalls and numerous deep pools. For casual visitors, the entrance of the gorge has a spectacular view of the massive fissure in the mountain. The interior remains a pristine ecosystem, serving as a haven for rare Cretan flora and large birds of prey that nest in the unreachable crevices. The name "Ha" is believed to be onomatopoeic, mimicking the sound of the wind echoing through the narrow gap.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Approaching the massive entrance of the gorge typically involves a hike from nearby villages in eastern Crete. Traversing the gorge itself is exclusively reserved for specialized expeditions.
📅
Best season
Due to high water flow and severe safety concerns, full canyoning is usually restricted to specific dry periods, often late spring or early summer, when unpredictable flash flood risks are lower.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
This is an extremely rugged, vertical environment requiring highly technical rope descents, scrambling, and swimming through narrow rock walls. It is absolutely not a standard walking or hiking trail.
🎒
What to bring
Professional canyoning equipment is absolutely mandatory, including specialized helmets, harnesses, ropes, and thick wetsuits. Casual day visitors should only bring standard gear to view the entrance.
🅿️
Parking
Parking is typically found in the nearest accessible village or at an informal rough pull-off point, followed by an immediate hike across loose, rough terrain to reach the starting base of the gorge.
⚠️
Safety
This is a highly dangerous, technical route. Only vastly experienced canyoners with certified professional guides and flawless equipment should attempt to traverse the dark interior of this deep gorge.
⏱️
Time needed
Merely viewing the awe-inspiring entrance takes an hour or two. A full technical descent by a team of highly experienced professionals can easily take a whole grueling day, depending on water levels.
