Located in the Sprotte valley within the Altenburger Land, this settlement has carried the nickname Button City (Knopfstadt) since the 19th century. The industrial manufacturing of buttons from corozo nuts shaped the local economy starting in 1864, a heritage meticulously documented today in the Button and Regional Museum. The architectural anchor of the center is the late Gothic St. Nicolai town church, dating back to the 15th century. Standing on the Pfefferberg hill at the town's edge is the 30-meter-tall Ernst-Agnes-Turm. Built in 1893, this steel lattice observation tower requires climbing 156 steps to reach a viewing platform that overlooks the rolling hills of eastern Thuringia out to the Ore Mountains. The historic market square, flanked by the 1899 town hall, serves as a natural gathering point. Local dining is defined by the Schmöllner Mutzbraten, a fist-sized cut of pork traditionally roasted over a birch wood fire and served with sauerkraut and bread. Narrow alleys lined with restored agricultural burgher houses give a sense of urban life during the 18th century. Walkers frequently use the area as a base for navigating the Sprotte hiking trail.
