Weißenburg in Bayern, located in the Middle Franconian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen, is a town of exceptional historical depth. Its origins trace back to Roman times when the Biriciana fort served as part of the Raetian Limes. Today, the reconstructed North Gate of the fort and the significant Roman thermal baths bear witness to this era. In the Middle Ages, Weißenburg evolved into a Free Imperial City, which brought economic prosperity and extensive independence. The well-preserved old town, with its almost completely intact city walls, Gothic town hall, and ornate half-timbered houses, reflects this historical wealth. Another highlight is the Wülzburg, a Renaissance fortress located on a nearby hill, famous for its unique pentagonal layout. Weißenburg serves as a gateway to the Altmühltal Nature Park and the Franconian Lake District, making it a good hub for both cultural and nature tourism. The Roman Museum houses one of Germany's most significant Roman treasure finds, discovered by chance in 1979.
