Abenberg is a historic small town in the Middle Franconian district of Roth, primarily known for its striking castle and the traditional craft of bobbin lace making. The settlement developed under the protection of Abenberg Castle, built in the 11th century by the Counts of Abenberg, which served as a significant power center in Franconia during the Middle Ages. Today, the castle houses a museum of Franconian history and a luxury hotel. A unique aspect of the town is the bobbin lace industry that flourished in the 19th century, earning Abenberg the title of the "Town of Noble Lace." This tradition is still kept alive today through a dedicated vocational school and the Bobbin Lace Museum. Geographically, the town is situated on a sandstone ridge at the gateway to the Franconian Lake District, providing it with a strategically advantageous position and a characterful landscape. The modern economy is characterized by medium-sized enterprises in metal processing and services, while tourism continues to play a growing role in the town's development.
