Monheim is located in the Swabian district of Donau-Ries in Bavaria and is a classic example of a medieval planned city. The town was systematically laid out in the 14th century by the Counts of Oettingen, with the wide marketplace and the two striking city gates, the Upper and Lower Gate, still defining the townscape today. A central point in the town's history is the Monheim Abbey, founded in the 9th century, where Saint Walpurga was venerated. After the Reformation and secularization, the town transformed into a bourgeois center for trade and craftsmanship. Geographically, Monheim lies on the Monheimer Alb, part of the Franconian Jura, giving the surroundings a hilly and forested character. Today, Monheim is a modern industrial site, particularly due to the company Hama (photo and electronic accessories), which has its headquarters here and is a major employer in the region.
