Memmingen, frequently referred to as the Gateway to the Allgäu, captivates visitors with one of the best-preserved historical town centers in southern Germany. Known as the town of gates and towers, it has an impressive medieval city wall system that still incorporates numerous original defensive structures, such as the prominent Kempter Gate and the Lindau Gate. Memmingen achieved major historical significance in 1525 during the Peasants' War, when the Twelve Articles were drafted here in the Kramerzunft building, a document widely regarded as Europe's first written declaration of human rights. The architectural masterpiece of the scenic market square is the magnificent Renaissance town hall with its distinctive onion domes, flanked by the historic tax office and the imposing St. Martin's Church, which houses valuable Gothic choir stalls. Another landmark is the Siebendächerhaus (House of Seven Roofs), an extraordinary half-timbered building originally constructed for tanners. The dense network of winding alleys and the idyllic town stream provide a welcoming setting for small boutiques and traditional Swabian restaurants serving local favorites like cheese spaetzle.
