Lindau am Bodensee is distinguished by its exceptional geographical setting, as the town's historic center is located entirely on a roughly 70-hectare island in Lake Constance, connected to the mainland by a road bridge and a railway causeway. The town's most iconic landmark is the impressive harbor entrance, flanked by a six-meter-tall Bavarian Lion statue and the 33-meter-tall New Lighthouse, constructed in 1856. The top of the lighthouse features extensive panoramic views across the lake extending to the Austrian and Swiss Alps. Wandering through the winding streets of the island town, visitors will notice the brightly frescoed Old Town Hall with its historic library, and the distinctive Mangturm tower situated right at the harbor basin. The Maximilianstraße, lined with centuries-old patrician houses featuring characteristic arcades, is a good promenade for shopping and leisurely walks. Lindau also serves as a central hub for passenger shipping on Lake Constance, with regular excursion boats departing for Bregenz, Konstanz, and the floral island of Mainau. Beyond its rich cultural heritage, visitors appreciate the almost Mediterranean atmosphere, characterized by palm-shaded outdoor cafes and crisp regional wines produced in nearby lakeside vineyards.
