Erlenbach am Main is the most populous city in the Miltenberg district of Lower Franconia. The city is attractively situated on the banks of the Main river, framed by the foothills of the Spessart and Odenwald mountains. Erlenbach's history has been closely linked to viticulture for centuries; the steep red sandstone slopes of the 'Erlenbacher Hochberg' produce excellent red wines, particularly Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder). In the early 20th century, the city experienced a massive industrial boom with the establishment of the shipyard and later the chemical fiber plants (now ICO). This mix of traditional winemaking and modern industry shapes the current cityscape and social fabric. Erlenbach features a wide range of leisure facilities, including a cinema and a heated terrace-style outdoor pool. Its location on the Main makes the city a key spot for river tourism and provides access to the Main Cycle Path, which winds through the region's pretty wine villages.
