Michelstadt is one of the oldest and most beautiful settlements in the Odenwald, located in southern Hesse. The town is world-famous for its unique town hall from 1484, a freestanding timber-framed building resting on massive oak pillars, considered one of the most significant examples of late Gothic half-timbered architecture in Germany. The entire old town is an ensemble of carefully restored timber-framed houses, narrow alleys, and historic buildings such as the Kellerei, which was once part of a Frankish estate. Also worth seeing is Einhard's Basilica in the Steinbach district, built in the 9th century by Einhard, the biographer of Charlemagne, and one of the most important structures from the Carolingian period. Michelstadt is not only a tourist magnet but also an economic center of the region. During the Advent season, the town transforms into a Christmas world, with a market regularly voted among the most beautiful in Germany. Geographically, Michelstadt is set in the rolling hills of the Odenwald and serves as a convenient starting point for hikes and nature experiences in the UNESCO Global Geopark Bergstraße-Odenwald.
