Feldberg (Black Forest) (Germany)

Weather…

At 1,493 meters, the Feldberg is the highest peak in the Black Forest and the highest mountain in Germany outside of the Alps. Located in southwestern Baden-Württemberg, it sits at the heart of one of the country's oldest and largest nature reserves, home to rare alpine plants such as sundew and yellow gentian. In winter, the Feldberg is the most significant ski resort in the German Central Uplands, featuring numerous lifts and slopes, while in summer it gives an extensive network of hiking trails with panoramic views that can reach as far as the Alps and the Vosges on clear days. The summit hosts several transmission towers and a weather station of the German Meteorological Service, which frequently records extreme wind speeds due to its exposed position. Feldsee, a deep blue tarn located directly below the summit, is a remnant of the mountain's glacial history and is strictly protected. Today, the region plays a central role in sustainable tourism in the High Black Forest.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Visitors generally travel via the scenic routes winding up from the Rhine Valley or by taking the efficient regional transit from nearby cities. The well-connected mountain passes serve as the primary entry points.
📅
Best season
The warmer months are exceptionally popular for exploring the vast networks of panoramic walking trails. From December to March, the area reliably shifts focus to widespread winter sports and lively snowy activities.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
Expect a diverse topography that gradually transitions from deep, shaded woodland trails into broad, unshielded alpine pastures. The hiking routes span from very gentle inclines to quite demanding vertical challenges.
🎒
What to bring
High-quality footwear with excellent grip is crucial for safely navigating the uneven and frequently damp root-covered paths. Carrying a versatile windbreaker and ample hydration is highly recommended for the upper ridges.
🅿️
Parking
Generous parking accommodations are strategically placed near the major lift terminals and significant trailheads. However, spaces can fill up remarkably fast during periods of pristine weather or heavy snowfall.
⚠️
Safety
The prominent elevation makes the summit completely vulnerable to harsh weather fronts and rapidly shifting conditions. It is important to stay aware of incoming clouds that can completely disorient hikers in minutes.
⏱️
Time needed
While reaching the top can be achieved in a few brisk hours, truly absorbing the majestic views and surrounding nature takes much longer. Devoting a full day allows for a deeply rewarding and relaxed mountain experience.
