Singen (Hohentwiel) is located in the southwestern corner of Baden-Württemberg, near the Swiss border and Lake Constance. The city is overshadowed by the Hohentwiel, an extinct volcanic plug that hosts the ruins of a massive fortress, the largest of its kind in Germany. Historically a ducal residence and a strategic stronghold, the fortress was never conquered by force. The modern city of Singen emerged as a powerhouse of industry in the late 19th century, driven by the presence of Maggi and large aluminum plants. Today, Singen serves as the primary commercial and shopping hub for the Hegau region and is a vital railway junction connecting Stuttgart, Zurich, and the Black Forest. Despite its industrial focus, the city is surrounded by a unique volcanic landscape featuring several dramatic peaks. It gives a rich cultural scene with art museums and modern event venues, balancing its role as a manufacturing center with being a gateway to the scenic Lake Constance area.
