💡 Tips
- Use the Hochschwarzwald Card, provided by many accommodations. It gives you free entry to numerous attractions and free boat trips.
- For the best view of the lake, hike the Jägersteig trail to the Bildstein viewpoint. It's a challenging walk, but the panorama is worth it.
- Is the full 18 km (11 mi) lake loop too long? Shorten the journey with the Drei-Seen-Bahn train, which stops at several points around the lake.
- Visit popular spots like the lido or boat rentals early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the biggest crowds, especially on sunny weekends.
🍽 Food
Buy it directly from a local butcher or a farm shop (Hofladen). It's delicious on fresh farmhouse bread.
Try a slice in one of the many lakeside cafés or inns (Gasthaus). Make sure it's made with genuine Kirschwasser (cherry schnapps).
Enjoy venison or wild boar in a traditional country inn in the surrounding villages, particularly recommended in autumn.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Discover farm shops around the lake selling local products like cheese, sausages, honey, and freshly baked bread.
Although Triberg is the main hub, you'll also find souvenir shops in Schluchsee offering traditional Black Forest woodcraft and clocks.
A walk along the shore early in the morning or at sunset gives tranquility and a beautiful, quiet atmosphere.
Hike up to the Riesenbühlturm. Once at the top, you're rewarded with an expansive view and relative quiet compared to the busy lake shore.
A short walk takes you to this peaceful spot with benches right by the water, well-suited for a quiet break away from the crowds.
Water temperature…
Schluchsee is not only the largest lake in the Black Forest but, at 930 meters above sea level, it is also Germany's highest reservoir. The town of Schluchsee is located directly on the northern shore and has developed into a significant water sports center. Due to the high altitude, the water remains refreshingly cool even in high summer, making the lake a popular destination for swimmers and sailors. A highlight for hikers is the Schluchsee Jägersteig, which provides spectacular views across the lake all the way to the Alps. The 18-kilometer lakeside loop is well-suited for cyclists and long walks. In winter, the surroundings transform into a quiet cross-country skiing area, away from the hustle and bustle of large ski centers. The dam itself is an impressive technical structure that can be visited. Arrival via the Dreiseenbahn from Titisee features beautiful views of the Black Forest landscape. Culinary enthusiasts can enjoy local specialties such as Black Forest trout in the lakeside inns. Schluchsee holds the title of 'climatic health resort,' emphasizing its excellent air quality. The best time for water sports is from June to August, while hikers especially cherish the golden days of October.
