Pongara Turtle Beach (Gabon)

Weather…

Pongara National Park is located directly across from Libreville at the mouth of the Komo River and is world-renowned as one of the most important nesting sites for the leatherback turtle. Every year between November and February, hundreds of these giant marine reptiles return to Pongara's sandy beaches to lay their eggs. The park spans an area of nearly 900 square kilometers, offering a mix of mangroves, coastal forests, and savannas. In addition to turtles, the protected area is home to elephants, buffaloes, and various monkey species. Local conservation programs work intensively to protect nests from predators and human interference. Pongara is also a key destination for low-impact tourism, as visitors can witness nocturnal nesting under professional supervision. Preserving this ecosystem is critical for the survival of the leatherback turtle across the entire Atlantic region. The combination of marine and terrestrial habitats makes the park biologically unique.
