Pofatuuraa Fort (French Polynesia)

Weather…

Pofatuuraa Fort is a significant historical landmark on Bora Bora, bearing witness to the American military presence during World War II. As part of 'Operation Bobcat' in 1942, the United States established a defensive base on the island to protect strategic South Pacific shipping routes. The fort still houses original seven-inch coastal defense guns, which were positioned to guard the entrance of the Teavanui Pass. Visitors can explore the remains of reinforced earthworks and concrete structures that once sheltered military equipment and personnel. Beyond its historical significance, the fort's elevated location provides some of the best panoramic views on the island. It has a remarkable overlook of Vaitape harbor, the surrounding turquoise lagoon, and the majestic peaks of Mount Otemanu, making it site for history buffs and hikers alike.
