Fa'ahia Archaeological Site (French Polynesia)

Weather…

The Fa'ahia archaeological site on the island of Huahine is one of the most significant sites in the Pacific, offering a rare window into the early Eastern Polynesian culture. Discovered in 1972 during the excavation for a hotel foundation, the site proved to be an archaeological goldmine because it was waterlogged. The anaerobic conditions of the silt preserved organic materials that would normally decay, such as wooden canoe planks, paddles, fiber cords, and even pieces of ancient clothing dating from 700 to 1100 AD. These artifacts provided the first concrete evidence of the sophisticated voyaging technology that allowed Polynesians to colonize distant islands like Hawaii and Easter Island. The site remains a pivotal reference point for historians studying the 'Great Migration,' proving that ancient Tahitians were master shipwrights and navigators long before European contact.
