Marae Anini is a significant archaeological site located at the southern tip of Huahine Iti, overlooking the crystal-clear lagoon. This ancient Polynesian temple was dedicated to the powerful gods Oro and Hiro, serving as a center for religious ceremonies and social gatherings. The structure is distinguished by its impressive 'ahu' or altar, which features massive, vertically placed coral slabs harvested from the nearby reef. Some of these coral blocks are exceptionally large, showcasing the incredible engineering skills of the ancient Huahine people. The site's location on the coast was strategic, connecting the spiritual rituals with the ocean, which was central to Polynesian life. As one of the few large marae on the island that remains relatively intact, Marae Anini provides a profound look into the pre-colonial history, mythology, and sacred traditions of the Society Islands.
