Sénanque Abbey (France)

Weather…

Sénanque Abbey was founded in 1148 by Cistercian monks in the heart of Provence, near the village of Gordes in the Vaucluse department. It is considered one of the purest examples of Romanesque architecture in southern France, strictly following the rules of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, which forbade any decorative ornamentation. The buildings, constructed from pale limestone, include the abbey church, the cloister, the dormitory, and the scriptorium, all of which have remained almost untouched since the 12th century. The abbey is world-famous for its extensive lavender fields that surround the stone structures, still cultivated and harvested by the resident monastic community today. Despite suffering during the Wars of Religion and the French Revolution, the abbey was carefully restored in the 20th century and now serves as an active spiritual center. Visitors appreciate the profound harmony between the austere architecture and the rugged natural landscape of the Luberon massif.
