Gordes is one of the most easy on the eye and visited villages in the Vaucluse mountains, built tightly into the cliffside. Its history dates back to Celtic-Ligurian times, and it served an important defensive function during the Middle Ages. The center of the village is dominated by a massive 11th-century castle, which was rebuilt in the Renaissance style in 1525. Gordes was a major center for the French Resistance during World War II, for which it later received an award. Since the mid-20th century, it has attracted numerous artists, including Victor Vasarely and Marc Chagall, due to its unique light and atmosphere. The nearby Senanque Abbey and the Village des Bories, consisting of characteristic stone huts, represent further significant historical assets.
