Often referred to as the "Venice of the Comtat," L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is an easy on the eye town built on a network of canals fed by the emerald-green waters of the Sorgue river. Historically, the town was a prominent center for the textile and paper industries, powered by numerous moss-covered wooden waterwheels, fifteen of which still turn slowly in the canals today. The town's atmosphere transforms completely on Sundays during the massive open-air market, blending local Provençal produce with one of Europe's largest collections of antique dealers. More than 300 permanent antique shops are clustered in dedicated "villages" throughout the town, making it an internationally recognized hub for vintage furniture, art, and rare collectibles. Beyond shopping, visitors can relax in waterfront cafes shaded by plane trees, observing the traditional "nego chin" flat-bottomed boats navigating the gentle currents. In the town center, the Collégiale Notre Dame des Anges is a must-see, hiding an exceptionally rich Baroque interior behind a relatively austere stone facade.
