Pernes-les-Fontaines, set in the scenic Vaucluse department, is often hailed as one of the most easy on the eye towns in Provence. Its distinctive title refers to the 41 ancient fountains scattered throughout its streets, each with its own unique history and design, ranging from the ornate Font du Cormoran to the simpler stone basins. Historically, the town served as the capital of the Comtat Venaissin from 1320 to 1354, leaving a legacy of grand monuments such as the Ferrande Tower, famous for its 13th-century frescoes. The town is enclosed by remains of its medieval ramparts, with three majestic gates still standing. Geographically, it sits on the banks of the Nesque river, in a fertile plain where agriculture thrives, particularly the cultivation of famous 'Vaucluse' strawberries and table grapes. Today, Pernes-les-Fontaines is a bustling community of artisans and traders, offering a well-suited blend of historic charm and modern Provençal lifestyle, making it a favorite stop for those exploring the nearby Mont Ventoux and the Luberon regional park.
