💡 Tips

  • Visit the spring as early in the morning as possible, especially in summer, because the single access path gets extremely crowded later on.
  • The spring is most spectacular in early spring (March-May) when the water level is high; in late summer, it may just look like a dry cave.
  • Parking is paid and basically mandatory at the village entrance; park at the first available lot you see to avoid bottlenecks.
  • Wear sturdy shoes for the walk up to the spring, as the paved path gives way to an uneven, rocky surface near the end.
  • Stop by the historic paper mill (Moulin à Papier Vallis Clausa) along the river to see traditional paper-making using water power.

Fontaine-de-Vaucluse is a site of mystical beauty and geological significance, centered around the source of the Sorgue river. With an annual output of 630 million cubic meters, it is the largest spring in France and one of the largest in the world. The depth of the cavern was long a mystery until a robotic probe reached the bottom at 308 meters. In the 14th century, the village was the retreat of the famous Italian poet Petrarch, who sought inspiration here for his sonnets to Laura. Today, visitors can explore a working 15th-century paper mill that still produces handmade paper using traditional water-powered methods. The ruins of the Castle of the Bishops of Cavaillon overlook the village from a high ridge, providing a dramatic backdrop to the emerald waters below.
