Located between the Luberon and the Lure mountain, Forcalquier is a historic town in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence known for its lively cultural life and expansive Monday morning market, which is one of the largest and most famous in the region. Once the capital of an independent county in the Middle Ages, its rich past is visible in the narrow streets lined with 13th and 15th-century stone mansions. The town is crowned by the Citadelle hill, where a brisk uphill walk leads to the octagonal Notre-Dame-de-Provence chapel and a carillon of 37 bells, rewarding visitors with a panoramic view of the Durance valley and the distant Alps. In the town square stands the Co-cathedral of Notre-Dame-du-Bourguet, a remarkable structure showcasing the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture. Forcalquier is also deeply connected to local botanical traditions; the surrounding region is rich in lavender fields and aromatic herbs. The town houses the Distilleries et Domaines de Provence, where traditional aperitifs like pastis and the local herbal liqueur RinQuinQuin have been crafted for over a century.
