Manosque is a quintessentially Provençal city located in the Durance river valley, positioned between the Luberon mountains and the foothills of the Alps. Although not the administrative capital, it is the most populous city in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department and a major economic engine for the region. The historic center, characterized by its unique pear-shaped layout when viewed from above, is a maze of narrow streets and sun-drenched squares. It is guarded by two monumental 14th-century gates: the Porte de la Saunerie and the Porte Soubeyran. Manosque is perhaps best known as the lifelong home of the celebrated French author Jean Giono, whose literary works were deeply inspired by the local landscapes and traditions. Today, the city gained international fame as the headquarters of L'Occitane en Provence, the luxury cosmetics company that operates its main factory and visitor gardens nearby. The town's economy is further bolstered by its proximity to the ITER international fusion research project in Cadarache. Surrounded by ancient olive groves and lavender fields, Manosque remains a lively center of culture, agriculture, and high-tech development in southeastern France.
