Rives-du-Loir-en-Anjou is a newly formed French commune in the Maine-et-Loire department, established on January 1, 2019, through the consolidation of Villevêque and Soucelles. Situated just north of Angers, the commune is geographically defined by the meandering Loir river, which provides both scenic beauty and fertile alluvial soil. The history of the area is rich with ecclesiastical significance; Villevêque was notably the summer residence of the Bishops of Angers for over six centuries, leaving behind a magnificent fortified castle and a historic mill. Today, the economy is characterized by a blend of high-end horticulture, market gardening, and its function as a residential satellite for the Angers metropolitan area. The commune places a high value on sustainable development and preserving its riparian ecosystems. Culturally, it hosts numerous art exhibitions and heritage festivals, making it a spirited center for both history and contemporary creativity in the Anjou region.
