Lys-Haut-Layon was created in 2016 as a 'commune nouvelle' through the merger of seven former villages, including Vihiers, in the heart of the Anjou region. Located in the Maine-et-Loire department, the municipality's geography is defined by the rolling hills of the Layon valley. This area is internationally celebrated for its sweet dessert wines, produced under the Coteaux-du-Layon AOC from Chenin Blanc grapes. Historically, the region was a significant theater during the War in the Vendée, and its local heritage is rich with monuments and sites commemorating this period. The local architecture is characterized by the use of 'tuffeau', a light-colored limestone typical of the Loire Valley. Today, Lys-Haut-Layon is a lively agricultural hub where wine-making remains the cornerstone of the economy. Visitors are drawn to its scenic vineyards, the historic ruins of Vihiers Castle, and traditional windmills, all reflecting the authentic charm of rural French life.
