Nègrepelisse is a historic town in the Tarn-et-Garonne department, located on a fertile plain along the Aveyron River northeast of Montauban. Established in the 11th century, the town's most tumultuous era occurred during the 17th-century Wars of Religion. As a major Huguenot (Protestant) stronghold, it was famously besieged and largely destroyed by the forces of King Louis XIII in 1622. The town's dominant landmark is the Château de Nègrepelisse, which features restoration work by the legendary architect Viollet-le-Duc. Today, the castle has been creatively repurposed into a center for art and design, blending medieval stone with modern glass architecture. The urban layout adheres to the 'bastide' style, centered on a spacious public square. The surrounding area is an agricultural heartland, renowned for its orchards producing apples and stone fruits. The Aveyron River provides both a scenic natural border and a venue for recreational activities such as kayaking and fishing, making the town an appealing destination for those exploring the Occitanie region.
