Darnétal is a historic town located just east of Rouen, whose development has been shaped by the Robec and Aubette rivers. These waterways provided the energy for dozens of mills, leading the town to become a powerhouse of the textile and dyeing industry in the 18th and 19th centuries. The town's urban fabric is a testament to this past, featuring grand 19th-century factory buildings and traditional worker housing. A standout landmark is the Tour de Carillon, a 16th-century tower that houses a magnificent set of bells, standing as a symbol of the town's enduring spirit. Modern Darnétal has successfully pivoted from industry to education and culture; it is now home to the National Higher School of Architecture of Rouen, housed in a stunningly renovated former mill. The town is also famous for its annual Comic Strip Festival (Festival Normandiebulle), which is one of the most respected in the country. With its 'Route of the Mills' and focus on preserving its unique industrial heritage, Darnétal features a fascinating glimpse into the technological history of Normandy while maintaining a lively, modern community vibe connected by Rouen's tramway system.
