One of Europe's largest flea markets, held annually on the first weekend of September, drawing millions of visitors and famous for mussels and fries.
Lille-Nord includes the historic heart of Vieux-Lille and the modern Euralille business district, perfectly illustrating the city's dynamic duality. Vieux-Lille is renowned for its Flemish Baroque architecture, featuring ornate brick facades from the 17th century around the Grand Place and the Vieille Bourse. The Citadel of Lille, one of Vauban's most significant fortifications, was built between 1667 and 1670 and is now surrounded by a large public park serving as a green lung for the city. In contrast, Euralille, inaugurated in 1994, is France's third largest business district, showcasing futuristic buildings like the Tour de Lille by Christian de Portzamparc. The city serves as a major European transport hub, where Eurostar and Thalys lines intersect, linking Paris, London, and Brussels with high speed connections. Historically a textile industry giant, Lille has successfully repurposed its industrial heritage into creative hubs and contemporary art galleries. Cultural life is anchored by the Palais des Beaux-Arts, one of the largest fine arts museums in France outside of Paris. Each September, the city hosts the Braderie de Lille, Europe's largest flea market, attracting millions of visitors from across the globe in a festive atmosphere.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
