Huge flea market on the first September weekend, one of Europe's largest, when millions of visitors flood the city and traditionally eat mussels with fries.
Lille, the capital of the Hauts-de-France region in northern France, is a major economic and cultural hub situated near the Belgian border. The city exhibits a strong Flemish influence, which is particularly evident in the ornate brick architecture and cobblestone streets of the Old Town (Vieux Lille). Once a powerhouse of the textile industry, Lille has successfully transitioned into a modern metropolis, bolstered by the development of the Euralille business district and its role as a key international railway hub connecting Paris, London, and Brussels via the Eurostar. Its cultural highlights include the Palais des Beaux-Arts, one of the largest art museums in France outside of Paris, and the 17th-century Citadel designed by Vauban. Every September, the city hosts the "Braderie de Lille," the largest flea market in Europe, attracting nearly two million visitors. As the birthplace of Charles de Gaulle, Lille also holds a position of great national historical importance. Lille hosted the basketball and handball events of the 2024 Olympics at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, converted for the occasion into a large indoor arena.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
