Marquette-lez-Lille is a commune in the heart of northern France that has evolved from a small rural settlement into a major industrial player and, finally, an attractive residential area. Its history is closely linked to the Abbey of Le Repos de Notre-Dame de Marquette, founded in the 13th century by Joan of Constantinople, which was once one of the most powerful nunneries in Flanders. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the town experienced a massive boom due to textile factories, mills, and chemical industries, which still shapes the town's architecture today, particularly the distinctive brick facades. In recent decades, Marquette has undergone a massive structural change. The banks of the Deûle have been reclaimed and converted into green spaces and cycling paths, significantly increasing the quality of life. Today, the town benefits from its excellent connections to the Lille transport network and features a blend of modern housing and historical heritage.
