Highlights of 2026

1

Once defined entirely by the coal extraction industry, this commune in the Pas-de-Calais department is now an example of intensive ecological and urban transition. Its industrial legacy is highly visible at Terril 115, a massive conical slag heap that has been completely reclaimed by nature and transformed into an elevated walking area. Historically, this site was a crucial part of the Mine de l'Escarpelle network. The town's borders seamlessly merge with the Forêt domaniale de Phalempin, a 600-hectare state forest crisscrossed with dedicated trails for hikers and mountain bikers. Just a few kilometers away lies the historic 9-9bis mining site in Oignies, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its preserved industrial architecture. At the center of the local grid stands the Église Notre-Dame de l'Assomption. Following the final closure of the coal pits in the 1990s, the community shifted its focus toward expanding green spaces and promoting sustainable outdoor tourism. A regional railway station provides a direct transport corridor, linking the municipality closely with the Lille metropolitan area to the north and the Lens agglomeration to the south.
