Located between Lille and Lens, Carvin is a historically rich town in the Pas-de-Calais department that reflects the typical transition of a Northern French community from agriculture to mining, and eventually to nature reclamation. The town's skyline is dominated by the majestic Saint-Martin Church, an 18th-century structure renowned for its impressive 55-meter-high baroque tower and intricate wooden furnishings inside. Like many of its neighbors, Carvin experienced a massive industrial boom with the opening of several coal pits in the 19th century. Remnants of this era can be seen in the old headframes and the meticulously preserved bourgeois houses built by mining directors in the town center. The true transformation of Carvin, however, is evident in its natural surroundings. The Tour d'Horloge nature reserve, created around a former mining subsidence area filled with water, is now a thriving ecological site covering dozens of hectares. Here, wooden walkways allow visitors to observe migratory birds and diverse flora in an environment where industry once ruled. The town also hosts lively weekly markets that showcase the culinary traditions and local produce of the Artois region.
