Step back in time to explore the medieval life of the capital of Valois. Discover the history, lords, and architecture of old Crépy-en-Valois.
Crépy-en-Valois, located in the Oise department, was the historic heart of the Valois county and a pivotal site in French royal history. As the ancestral home of the House of Valois, which provided kings of France for over two centuries, the town exudes an air of regal nobility. Its most famous landmark is the Castle of the Counts of Valois, which now houses the International Museum of Archery and Sacred Art, a world-class institution dedicated to the history of the bow and arrow. The town's layout is distinctly medieval, with significant portions of its defensive walls and the impressive 'Porte de Paris' gate still standing. Geographically, Crépy sits on a high plateau on the edge of the Forest of Retz, a position that once allowed it to control major trade routes. Over the centuries, its economy evolved from wool trade and grain production to a modern diversified base including logistics and manufacturing. Today, it is a bustling community within the Hauts-de-France region, well-connected to Paris by train while maintaining a rich calendar of traditional events, such as the Saint Sebastian archery festivals.
