Maubeuge is a historic city in the Nord department of northern France, situated along the Sambre river just a few kilometers from the Belgian border. The town grew around a 7th-century double monastery founded by Saint Aldegund, but its defining era came in the late 17th century. Following the Treaty of Nijmegen, King Louis XIV commissioned the legendary engineer Vauban to fortify the town as a vital link in the 'Iron Frontier' protecting France. These massive ramparts, which survived numerous sieges, remain a central feature of the urban landscape today. During the Industrial Revolution, Maubeuge emerged as a major center for metallurgy and machine manufacturing, leading to significant prosperity and rapid urbanization. However, the town suffered catastrophic damage during both World Wars and was extensively rebuilt in a modernist style by architect André Lurçat after 1945. Modern Maubeuge is a cultural hub for the Avesnois region, home to a popular zoo situated within the historic fortifications and famous in French pop culture through the song 'Un clair de lune à Maubeuge'.
