Château de La Ferté-Milon (France)

Weather…

The Château de La Ferté-Milon in the Aisne department is a fascinating monument to unfinished late medieval ambition. Construction was initiated in 1393 by Louis I, Duke of Orléans and brother of King Charles VI, intended as a massive stronghold to display his power and influence. However, work ceased abruptly in 1407 following the Duke's assassination in Paris, leaving the grand project permanently incomplete. Its most striking feature is the monumental facade, stretching over 100 meters long and rising 28 meters high, adorned with a large bas-relief depicting the Coronation of the Virgin. Despite its unfinished state, the site is regarded as a masterpiece of 14th-century military architecture, showcasing the pinnacle of French craftsmanship. The town of La Ferté-Milon is also historically significant as the birthplace of the famous dramatist Jean Racine in 1639. Today, the imposing ruins provide a dramatic backdrop for cultural festivals and are protected as a national historical monument.
