Stiring-Wendel is an exceptional example of a 19th-century industrial town in the Moselle department. Founded in 1846 by Charles de Wendel, the town was literally built from the ground up to house workers for his ironworks and coal mines. This intimate connection with the industrialist de Wendel family not only provided the town's name but also dictated its entire physical layout. The urban planning followed a paternalistic model, with churches, schools, and residences all provided by the company. Geographically, Stiring-Wendel is set in a valley directly on the border with the German state of Saarland, making it a crucial hub for cross-border transit today. Following the decline of the coal and steel industries in the 1980s, the town underwent a profound economic transformation. Today, Stiring-Wendel is a bustling border town that honors its industrial heritage while repositioning itself as a service hub and a preferred residential area for commuters working in Germany. Its architecture continues to reflect the golden era of mining and metallurgy in Lorraine.
