Château-Renault, affectionately known as the City of Leather, is a fascinating small town in the historic province of Touraine, distinguished by a rich industrial heritage and a highly pretty location in the Brenne river valley. For centuries, the town was a thriving center for the tanning industry, and this unique legacy can be impressively explored today at the Leather Museum (Musée du Cuir), housed in a former factory that brings the complex craftsmanship of leather production back to life. The townscape is boldly dominated by the remains of an 11th-century castle, whose massive keep towers high above the rooftops and features a fantastic panoramic view over the entire river valley. Walking through the winding, atmospheric streets of the lower town reveals ancient half-timbered houses, pleasant little squares, and the impressive Saint-André church with its fine architectural details. The green banks of the Brenne River invite visitors to enjoy relaxing afternoons and peaceful strolls, far removed from the massive tourist crowds of the central Loire Valley.
