Romorantin-Lanthenay serves as the principal gateway and capital of the Sologne region in the Loir-et-Cher department. Formed by a merger in 1961, the town holds a fascinating place in French history due to King Francis I's ambition to transform it into a royal capital. He commissioned Leonardo da Vinci to design a massive palace and a model city here, and although the project was never fully realized, it deeply influenced the area's development. During the industrial era, the town thrived on cloth manufacturing and later became a global name in the automotive sector through the Matra factory, where innovative vehicles like the Espace were born. The Sauldre River flows through the town in multiple branches, creating an appealing atmosphere filled with historic watermills and timber-framed houses. Romorantin-Lanthenay remains a bustling center where industrial heritage meets the tranquil, lake-filled landscapes of the surrounding wilderness.
