Lavardin, located in the Loir-et-Cher department, is officially recognized as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France and has a rich medieval heritage. The village is dominated by the dramatic ruins of a castle built in the 11th century by the Lords of Lavardin and later expanded by the Counts of Vendôme. This fortress was considered impregnable for centuries until it was dismantled in the 16th century by order of King Henry IV during the Wars of Religion. Another significant treasure is the Romanesque Church of Saint-Genest, world-famous for its exceptional frescoes dating from the 12th to the 16th centuries. These murals were rediscovered in the 20th century after being hidden under layers of plaster, revealing intricate religious scenes of great artistic value. The village itself is characterized by its harmonious white tuffeau stone houses, a Gothic bridge spanning the Loir river, and terraced gardens. Lavardin uniquely blends the grandeur of its historical ruins with a peaceful riverside setting, making it a jewel of the Centre-Val de Loire region.
