Amboise is a historic town in the Loire Valley, primarily renowned for its magnificent royal castle. Perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Loire River, the Château d'Amboise was a favored residence of French kings during the 15th and 16th centuries, including Charles VIII and Francis I. During this era, the town emerged as a spirited center of Renaissance culture in France. Amboise is particularly famous as the final residence of Leonardo da Vinci, who moved here at the invitation of Francis I and spent his last years at the Clos Lucé manor. The town was also the site of the 1560 Amboise conspiracy, a violent episode during the French Wars of Religion. Today, the old town, with its timber-framed houses and troglodytic dwellings, is a major tourist destination and part of the UNESCO-listed Loire Valley. Beyond its historical landmarks, the region is celebrated for its viticulture and its scenic location along France's longest river.
