Picturesquely situated in the Indre department, Argenton-sur-Creuse has rightfully earned the affectionate nickname 'The Venice of the Berry'. The undeniable heart of the town is the Creuse river, whose banks are lined with pleasant traditional houses featuring wooden galleries and wrought-iron balconies that overhang the water, creating a highly photogenic scene. Looming over the historic center from a high hill is the Notre-Dame-des-Bancs chapel, known locally as the Bonne-Dame. A climb up to this monument rewards visitors with a sweeping panoramic view of the river valley and the town’s characteristic red-tiled roofs. A fascinating aspect of the town's heritage is preserved in the Shirtmaking Museum (Musée de la Chemiserie). Housed in a former textile factory, it traces the region's rich industrial past when Argenton was the bustling epicenter of French men's shirt manufacturing. Just a few minutes' drive away lies the major archaeological site of Argentomagus, a sprawling Gallo-Roman city boasting a modern museum and ancient theater ruins. Wandering through its winding streets and viewing the old watermills, you will discover a town radiating authentic, tranquil French charm.
